1970's era photos of the Old Sixth Ward from  the
"Building and Land Assessment Records of the Assessor and Collector of Taxes
the predecessor to the Harris County Appraisal District

Many home values in the Old Sixth Ward were lowered during the 1970's, with property appraisers taking pictures of homes and attaching them to pink forms, most often writing "Salvage Value Only" in the property description area. Most of these homes are still standing 30+ years later, and have been lovingly restored and protected.

Under the supervision of Sarah Canby Jackson, Harris County Archivist, Charles Stava and Larissa Lindsay were trained as volunteers, and allowed to access the archives, scanning all of the photos available.  We have a picture of almost every address in this neighborhood.  They will be posted as they are "matched up and cleaned up", but those completed are below. It was a quick scan job, and the metadata is by tax record numbers and not addresses. In case you aren't aware, your property carries the same HCAD number throughout its life, your account number is not assigned to you, but to your land. If your address is not yet on this list, and you are anxious to see what your house looked like in the 1970's, email me with your tax number and I will try to search and send. The format of posting will eventually change, this was the quickest method to get them accessible. The addresses listed are what was on the property at that date, some have been moved or demolished.

* 2016 Kane was built in the 1880s at 2018 Kane and was moved to 2016 in 1907 when the Queen of Sabine was constructed.
Approximately 5 additions were made to 2016 and then it was encapsulated in a brick veneer...of course, since the Lighthouse family, the owners of 2016 and 2018 were owners of Lighthouse Brick Co., which became Cordell Brick (the brand that the brick veneer was made from).
