The Old Sixth Ward Neighborhood Association (O.S.W.N.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, incorporated in the State of Texas with the mission of preserving the Old Sixth Ward. This IRS status allowed creation of a Revolving Loan Fund to help with preservation, offering small loans at low interest rates to property owners within the neighborhood. A portion of proceeds from the Home Tour fund this and other projects in the neighborhood. This fund was created long before the State of Texas granted permission to make loans based on home equity. As a result, while the mission is still preservation, it has evolved into efforts to stop teardowns and implementation of performance standards for retaining our historic character. O.S.W.N.A. Meetings are held on the third Monday of most every month from 6:30pm to 8pm at the Dow Elementary School, 1900 Kane Street. Some months we break into committees and do not meet as a group. Please join us. Everyone is welcome. Please email Larissa ASAP with any item you would like to see on the agenda. Board terms are by calendar year. Board President is Larissa Lindsay |
Thank You! To
The Houston Press for voting the Old Sixth Ward as Houston's Best Hidden
Neighborhood!
Welcome to the Old Sixth Ward home on the web The Old Sixth Ward was founded January 1, 1877, by Houston officials from the northern section of the Fourth Ward. It is the oldest intact neighborhood in the city of Houston, and has the largest concentration of Victorian structures in the region, outside of Galveston. Bounded by Memorial Drive, Glenwood Cemetery, Washington Avenue and Houston Avenue, most people know us as "that neighborhood by 1400 Lubbock or Traffic Ticket Court" on the western edge of downtown. In the center of the neighborhood is the Justin Dow School Park. In 1978, the
Old Sixth Ward was the first Houston neighborhood listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. It was designated as a
Historic District by the City Council on June
25, 1998. The design guidelines have been proposed in order to discuss and
regulate the area defined as the " Old Sixth Ward Historic
District" |

Less than one half of one percent (.03%) of the City of Houston is designated "historic" and, therefore, protected by the City's Preservation Ordinance. Few areas are expected to meet the strict criteria for designation in the future. |
