| Houston's Old Sixth Ward Historic Photo's |
Below are old pictures of homes from the neighborhood. Most still exist. Some pictures are 1970's old, some are 1940's & older. Some pictures are in great condition, others show their age and use. They come from many different collections, J. D. Bartell, A. H. Smith, Leon Hale, Emilia Rumore (Santopolo), Martha Diaz, Bill Gay, Conte Family, Jimmy Schriver, William Lighthouse family, Rose Fazzino (Barbato), Bennie Ansell (look at her website), McLeod Family and others. Double-click on the address below, and the picture should come up in your browser. Use your web browser's back button to return to the picture's page. You will also find pictures of families who grew up in the neighborhood, especially the Santopolo (1700 State), Romeo, Conte (1700 State), Diaz (2200 Kane), McLeod (900 Sabine) and Powers (1900 Lubbock) families. Nancy Siragusa provided the St. Joseph's photos from the 1940s. The 1947 Fire pictures came from Mary Louise Piazza. The Alexander family provided 2218 & 2220 Lubbock photos .
Here are the 1970's era appraisal photos.
This is a rough start, some are close-guesses. If there is more than one of an address, the additional pictures have a letter to distinguish the difference. An asterisk denotes a lost, but not forgotten home. All homes on the south side of the 1700 block of State are gone.

These houses were moved to SAVE THEM. Thank their owners. Many houses in this neighborhood have been marketed as "tear downs" by realtors and developers. As you can see from many of the pictures posted, they can be beautifully restored and saved for generations to come.
